DFI Day 1

DFI Day Tahi: Core business session:

Today Friday 30th July was my first session of DFI. I feel that I am quite confident in the use of most digital tools, however, I am excited to learn more tips and tricks that I can implement in the classroom. Today I learnt many tips around google docs that I was not aware of previously. The tips/tools below that I have learnt about today will allow me to be more efficient in my work (work smarter, not harder). These tools will not only benefit my professional life, but will benefit my students learning as there are many tools they can use to further their skills in the digital world but also to further enhance their learning (reading, writing).

Google Docs -

Pasting without formatting - Especially helpful for student blogs.

Titles, heading 1 and table of contents - There is a tool to save the headings for the document (by hovering over the heading title). Table of contents - Go to Insert > Table of contents. This will include all of my headings in the document. If you click on this box at any point, there will be a refresh button that will update as you add more headings throughout.
  • This will be very useful in the class when students are writing their paragraphs up and publishing their work.

Voice typing -
Speak out exactly what you are wnating to inclule (even fullstops). This would be a great way to add text to a document for students who struggle to get their ideas out/type/dyslexic students.

The Google Docs Scavenger Hunt -
This task, would be a fun and engaging way to. test and encourage students use of skills on Google Docs. By using the explore option I will encourage my learners to be more creative in their presentation of their learning while also exposing them to more efficient ways of researching while completing tasks on their Google Docs.

The eyes on the text task -
This would be an awesome resource for students to use as a reading log - They could read to the doc as evidence of their reading and this would also be a great editing skill.

Today I followed the learn, create, share idea that we have been working on in class through Manaiakalani. Today I "created: by making a task which I could take back into the classroom relating to our inquiry topic - Tokyo Olympics. I tried to utilise all of the features we learnt today and create a task that students would find interesting and encourage some quality/creatie work.

Below is my Google Doc Scavenger Hunt & My "Create".

  1. Kia ora Rebecca. I'm so glad you're keen to try some of these new tips and tricks out with your students. They will really benefit from a scavenger hunt type activity, especially as you can personalise it for your learners. I like the work smarter not harder philosophy. Hopefully they'll be plenty more time saving tips and tricks over the coming weeks!

  2. Kia ora Rebecca,
I like your mindset of being open to new learning even though you are confident when using digital tools. Being able to see the potential use of these tools in your class is fantastic and I look forward to seeing how you develop these in your class.

I love your learn, create and share doc that you created and how it links to what you are doing already with your students. It makes the learning not only engaging but more authentic as well😊
