DFI DAY 6

DFI Day Ono: Enabling Access - Sites

We moved on to focus specifically on Google Sites. We discussed the purpose of classroom sites, and the importance of visual appeal and user experience. The key ideas were that sites are a one-stop hub for learning, accessible (anywhere, anytime, any place), rewindable, visible, and a source of information, weekly overviews, and timetables.

Looking at my own site, I made goals around functionality and visual layout. I want my site to be used by my learners and their whanau with ease, meaning there needs to be minimal clicks, consistency and rewindable learning. I will focus on accessibility, layout & content. I will also ensure everything is accessible, and create buttons to hide previous weeks learning to minimise the amount of scrolling students have to do.

Below are some before and afters of my class site. I have hidden content from previous weeks/terms. I have also added students task board/rotations to the site and a weekly overview for students/whanau to see and have access to outside of school also. I believe after fixing up my site, that it is more accessible, easier to work and find resources, and is more rewindable for students.

I am excited to continue developing my site and make planning and learning more visible as well as include more multimodal content. Watch this space!

  1. Ka pai Rebecca. This increased visibility will help whānau engage with their children's learning, especially if they are viewing from a non-school account. It was great to see everyone's sites progress today. It will be interesting to hear what your students think of the changes.

  2. Great work Rebecca! I like the way you have reflected on your site and looked at it through the eyes of students and whānau so they can access info and resources easily.

  4. Thanks for sharing your site with me Rebecca. I can see how much work you have put into it recently. As a practitioner I see how you continually reflect and try to make things better from the students perspectives. Have you noticed a difference in student engagement with your new and improved site ?
